Assuming that addiction is, in fact, a disease, the question emerges about what causes it. When examining any disease, both genetic and environmental variables should be taken into consideration. Many prominent psychologists, namely Dr. Gabor Mate, have argued that trauma is entirely the source of addiction. As an environmental variable, trauma that the subject experiences will determine their susceptibility to addiction. As a genetic variable, the intergenerational trauma that impacts the subject’s genetic composition will be equally if not more impactful. Can we truly boil addiction down to being a function of trauma? It is likely either more complicated than that or more must be understood about trauma and its effects. Regardless, it’s likely safe to say that addressing trauma could benefit those suffering from addiction.
